Chipped, ground and cut stone artifacts are common at precontact and
historic sites in northeastern North America. Unfortunately, comprehensive
lithic sourcing efforts remain a rare component of archeological research
in the Northeast. On October 10, 1996, nearly thirty archeologists and
geologists concerned with this issue met in Rutland, Vermont and established
the Northeast Lithic Database (NELD) workgroup. NELD was organized to facilitate
improved communication among widespread lithic researchers, largely through
the internet, and to develop a complex, but user friendly lithic sourcing
database on the World Wide Web. Of several possibilities, the UCONN server
was chosen as the best possible Web host for this database. A total of
six committees were formed to continue strides made at the initial NELD
meeting: Executive, Web Page design, Site Security & Ethics, Database
Design, Bibliography, Nomeclature and Mapping & Graphics.
Our goals include:
-
the sharing of information
-
the compilation of a single database
-
establishing consensus on
nomenclature, sampling, and analytical methods
-
identifying gaps in our current kowledge base
-
establishing means to monitor and protect
sensitive archaeological and geological resources
-
consolidating disparate information
