NELD WORKGROUP MEETING AT THE

37th Annual Meeting of the NEAA
Chateau Montebello, Quebec
April 11-13, 1997

SESSION I

The Northeast Lithic Database (NELD) Workgroup: Constructing a Lithic Sourcing Database for the Northeast, Report and Discussion.
Organizers and Chairs: Kathleen E. Callum (GEOARCH, Inc.) and Robert A. Sloma (GEOARCH, Inc.), Brian D. Jones (UCONN), Terrance L. LaPointe (AMEYA), Barbara L. Calogero (UCONN), Hugh W. Jarvis (SUNY Buffalo) and Adrian Burke (SUNY Albany).

Chipped, ground and cut stone artifacts are common at precontact and historic sites in northeastern North America. Unfortunately, comprehensive lithic sourcing efforts remain a rare component of archeological research in the Northeast. On October 10, 1996, nearly thirty archeologists and geologists concerned with this issue met in Rutland, Vermont and established the Northeast Lithic Database (NELD) workgroup. NELD was organized to facilitate improved communication among widespread lithic researchers, largely through the internet, and to develop a complex, but user friendly lithic sourcing database on the World Wide Web. Of several possibilities, the UCONN server was chosen as the best possible Web host for this database. A total of six committees were formed to continue strides made at the initial NELD meeting: Executive, Web Page design, Site Security & Ethics, Database Design, Bibliography, Nomeclature and Mapping & Graphics. This session will review NELD goals, progress, and outline future objectives. The efficacy of electronic mail and the developing Web Page (http://borealis.lib.uconn.edu/neld/) will be briefly discussed as major components of the NELD communication network. Individuals active in lithic sourcing issues are encouraged to attend this NELD report, ask questions and offer suggestions regarding the issues that will be addressed.

SESSION II

The Northeast Lithic Database (NELD) Workgroup: Business Meeting
Organizers and Chairs: Kathleen E. Callum (GEOARCH, Inc.) and Robert A. Sloma (GEOARCH, Inc.).

A business meeting for NELD members and any individuals interested in lithic sourcing research is proposed. NELD established six sub-committees to review organizational/Executive concerns, Web Page design, Site Security & Ethics, Database Design, Bibliography development, Nomeclature and Mapping & Graphics development. This workgroup meeting will address issues raised by subcommittee representatives and others in its first NEAA session, The Northeast Lithic Database (NELD) Workgroup: Constructing a Lithic Sourcing Database for the Northeast, Report and Discussion. Immediate and long term goals will be developed for each committee. Action items will be assigned to current and new NELD members as a means of accomplishing planned goals. NELD members will continue to communicate and work towards accomplishing their goals via the internet. The next three-dimensional NELD meeting will be scheduled. Individuals active in lithic sourcing issues are encouraged to attend this NELD meeting, ask questions, offer suggestions regarding the issues that will be addressed and join NELD!
